Yorkshire’s Jonny Bairstow smashed a maiden IPL hundred for Sunrisers Hyderabad as they inflicted an embarrassing 118-run defeat on Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Local boy Bairstow blasted 12 boundaries and seven sixes as he knocked up a score of 114 off just 56 balls, in a 185-run partnership with David Warner, who also hit a century.
The century comes as just the third in the IPL for an Englishman, and also the highest, beating Kevin Pietersen and Ben Stokes.
Bairstow eventually fell to Indian leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, while his partner Warner staked a huge claim for a spot in Australia’s World Cup squad.
Bairstow said after his innings:
“I’m absolutely cooked,
“It was fantastic to bat in the middle with him [Warner].”
Chasing 232 to win, Bangalore lost five wickets for just 30 runs, including captain Kohli and South African talisman AB de Villiers.
Bairstow will now enter the County Championships in good form, with Yorkshire’s first game set to take place next weekend against Nottinghamshire.
