Two arrested for kidnapping woman and child in attempted Rotherham bank robbery

A man and a woman are in custody after being arrested in connection with a kidnapping and attempted robbery in Rotherham.

At around 8am on Tuesday 21 November, a 43-year-old woman and her child were approached in the Ash Grove area by a man claiming to be a police officer. He told them to get into a blue Audi S3. Half an hour later, a man with a covered face went into a Barclays bank in the Stag Area of Rotherham and demanded staff open the safe.

The safe could not be opened and the man returned to the car. It is reported that there were two other masked men waiting in the vehicle, as well as the mother and her young child.

They were then left as the three men fled the scene and later abandoned and torched the car in a car park in Wickersley.

No one was hurt in the attempted robbery, but Detective Inspector Mark Monteiro said everyone involved was shaken.

He added: “This is an extremely distressing incident and specially trained officers are supporting both the woman, child and her family as well as the bank staff.

We believe this was a targeted attack and I want to reassure the public these types of incidents are extremely rare. The three suspects did not use any weapons and nobody was harmed.”

Det Insp Monteiro also thanked members of the public for their help with the investigation so far.

Anyone with additional information should contact the police.
