“This is the time”: Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal appeals for more support from Owls fans against Brentford

Sheffield Wednesday manager Carlos Carvalhal has called on supporters to get behind his promotion chasing side during their Championship run-in.

He used his pre-match press conference ahead of tomorrow’s game against Brentford to ask that fans play their part in creating a positive atmosphere at Hillsborough. He said: “This is why directly after the game [on Saturday] I appealed to the fans to understand the situation and to provide the team with better support compared to the last game.

Sheffield Wednesday will face mid-table Brentford at Hillsborough tomorrow.

“This is the time for the fans to push the players although we must give a reason to the fans to push. If the fans can understand the mistakes, push and push the players, they will respond positively. We need the fans for sure.”

His Owls side lie 6th in the EFL Championship, with a seven point cushion from 7th placed Norwich City.

Speaking about tomorrow night’s game, Carvalhal said that although the momentum gained from four wins in a row means his team are confident, they would make sure not to be complacent. He said: “We are concentrating on the next game, We don’t live in the past, we live in the present and prepare for the future.

“The confidence of the team is high of course, but we must understand that we must fight and run hard to achieve more victories. We must be careful, we must play with our heads and a big heart.”

Carvalhal used the rest of press conference to answer questions about injuries, confirming that experienced striker Gary Hooper was nearing a return. Hooper turned out for the Wednesday reserve side today, but along with Tom Lees, he’s not likely to be in the matchday squad tomorrow. Left back Morgan Fox could be fit to return to the starting 11.

Response to Carvalhal’s comments on social media was mixed. Some fans said he shouldn’t need to ask for more support, whilst others didn’t think it would make much difference to the atmosphere at Hillsborough.
