It was a tough weekend for Championship strugglers Barnsley, while mid-table Sheffield Wednesday thrashed Reading at Hillsborough.
Barnsley have just three more fixtures remaining to secure their safety.
While a 2-1 defeat away to Yorkshire rivals Leeds will not have helped, their fate is firmly in their hands. They have a game in hand over Bolton above them and wins in their remaining games will save them from relegation, whatever their rivals do.
Elsewhere, Sheffield United threw away an early lead against relegation-threatened Birmingham City in a result which will not have done their slim play-off hopes any favours.
Wednesday’s Fernando Forestieri was on form again on Saturday, scoring twice in a 3-0 win against Reading.
In League One, mid-table Doncaster lost 1-0 at home to Oxford United – an important win for the visitors looking to secure their League One status for next season in a tight relegation battle at the bottom.
