Joe Root was caught out on his first ball in Yorkshire’s County Championship game against reigning champions Essex.
Pundits had previously speculated on the positive impact that his and Jonny Bairstow’s return would have on the team after Yorkshire’s heavy loss last week at Taunton.
Ahead of today’s match, ex-umpire Dickie Bird told JUS News: “I think Yorkshire will do well because we’ll be strengthened by Root and Bairstow in the side, so we should do well at Chelmsford.
“I said at the beginning of the season that I think Yorkshire will win the league this year because we’ve got a wealth of magnificent young players.
“I think some of them will play for the country.”
Bairstow has also fallen at Chelmsford after being bowled for 7 by Sam Cook.
Last season, Essex beat Yorkshire by a mammoth 376 runs at Chelmsford as they finished as unbeaten champions.
