Petition after closure of Woodbourn Athletics Stadium

A petition was started after Sheffield Hallam University decided to close Woodbourn Stadium on Monday and Friday evenings from December to January.

Jim McQuaid, started the petition after Sheffield City Council “broke their promise” to keep the athletics track open following the demolition of Don Valley in 2013.

Neil M. commented on the petition website: “Sheffield City Council needs to honour its promises to enable its citizens to lead healthy active lives, which is what they are supposedly encouraging. This smacks of saying one thing and actually doing something completely contrary.”

Sheffield Hallam decided to close the track due to low usage on the Monday and Friday evenings in winter, where poor weather means many chose to use other indoor facilities.

A press statement said this is in line with other outdoor facilities across the country whose programmes close during the winter due to low participation.

The decision was reached after discussions with the athletics clubs across the city and the Sheffield Athletics Group.

However, Jessica L., whose children use the facility, said: “Adequate sporting facilities are essential for our children – they need to be open, safe and well lit.”
