Norovirus Outbreak: number of people infected by winter vomiting bug on the rise

The number of schools and hospitals affected by Norovirus has increased over the last week.

Some schools in South Yorkshire closed for two days to carry out a deep clean on their sites, whilst others issued a warning reminding pupils not to return to school for 48 hours after their symptoms pass.

Norovirus, also known as the winter vomiting bug, is highly contagious and spreads easily from person to person.

Last week the NHS was forced to close more than 1,100 hospital beds following the outbreak of the virus.

Almost double the number of hospital beds have been closed every day this week compared to last year.

Common symptoms of Norovirus include feeling nauseas, vomiting, fever and headaches.

Staying at home is the best way to avoid putting others at risk- the symptoms only last for two or three days.
