Three men have been released following an assault in Rotherham town centre on Saturday that left a man with life-threatening injuries.
The 38-year-old man was treated by air ambulance paramedics and taken to hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.
Police were called to the incident on Bridgegate at 4.30pm after reports of a brawl breaking out in the street.
Five men were arrested at the scene on suspicion of GBH with intent and public order offences. The men released are still under police investigation.
Det Chief Insp Simon Palmer said that the circumstances around the incident were still being established.
He added: “There is some speculation online that this is linked to local football related rivalries. However at this time we do not believe this to be the case.”
