The founder of Sheffield charity Mums In Need, has been shortlisted by national magazine Stylist for an award for inspirational women.

This is part of their ‘Remarkable Women’ awards ceremony which is in its first year. She has been nominated for “Inspiration of the Year”.

Laura Riley, 39, created Mums In Need in 2013 as a support network for mothers who had suffered emotional abuse by an ex-partner after experiencing this herself.

Speaking on the charity and her nomination, Laura said she was proud to see the positive impact their work is having on women’s lives.

She said: “It’s an honour to be nominated for this award, our charity is all about empowering women so it will be wonderful to experience an award ceremony that is all about celebrating women’s achievements.”

Laura created the charity two years before coercive or controlling behaviour became recognised as a criminal offence in 2015.

Emotional abuse can include intimidation and humiliation and the charity aims to ensure mothers do not suffer alone.

The charity currently supports 33 women through services including one-to-one sessions, coffee mornings, legal and financial advice and a variety of workshops.

Inspiration of the Year is the only category in the Remarkable Women Awards which is voted for by the public.

People can vote for Laura by emailing with her name in the subject line. Voting closes 28th February and Mums In Need invite people to share their reasons for voting for Laura on social media using the #LauraIsInspirational
