‘Fat Lads’ win charity award

Charity football team ‘Battling Fat Lads’ have won an award for raising money and awareness for mental health support in Sheffield.

The group, who are based in West Yorkshire, won Best Sporting Based Organisation at the My Mirfield awards on Saturday night.

The ‘Fat Lads’ have raised over £1000 for the Sheffield branch of men’s mental health charity Andy’s Man Club.

Captain of the team Phil Russell described winning the award as a humbling experience.

He said: “To win the award was amazing. I’m really proud of us as a group, we are more like a little community and I feel things are really going to take off for us in 2019.”

The team have more fundraising matches and events planned for later in the year and chairman Simon Watts said winning this award will help promote the group further.

“This will give a huge boost to us being able to spread our message and increase male mental health awareness, even last night we were able to engage with men who might otherwise ignore these types of issues,” he added.
