Fans encouraged to ‘paint the town red’ to celebrate team’s promotion

Barnsley football fans will ‘paint the town red’ next Wednesday to mark the team’s promotion to the Sky Bet Championship.

An open top bus will depart Oakwell stadium at 18.30 and travel along Pontefract Road, Schwäbisch Gmünd Way, Eldon Street and Market Hill before arriving at Barnsley Town Hall.

Players and Head Coach Daniel Stendel will then be welcomed into the Town Hall by the Mayor of Barnsley, councillor Steve Green, before taking to the balcony to greet supporters.

The club and council have encouraged fans to paint the town a ‘sea of red’ by bringing flags, banners and wearing team colours.

Head Coach Stendel said he was looking forward to thanking fans for their continued support this season.

He said: “This is a big achievement for us, we have achieved our goal of automatic promotion. We have one game to go and the focus remains on that, but after Saturday we know we can celebrate properly with our fans too.

“Thank you to everyone who has helped us along the way and to help arrange our celebrations. We are looking forward to seeing everyone.”

Barnsley secured promotion on Tuesday evening after Portsmouth’s defeat left them four points behind the Tykes with one game remaining.

Stendel’s side could still win the League One title if they better Luton Town’s result on Saturday.

Supporters will be able to watch a live screening of the team’s game at Bristol Rovers at Oakwell.
