Barnsley Ladies Rugby yesterday suffered Junior Cup heartbreak for the second year in a row as they lost their semi-final game to Lewes, 5 – 8.
The Ladies, who have already won the Women’s National Challenge 1 North league, were hoping to go on and win the cup, a feat they had previously failed to achieve last season.
Lewes opened the scoring with a drop goal 12 minutes into the first half, but Barnsley were quick to respond, with full back Leonora Salvucci scoring a try only moments later.
Alix Taylor was unable to convert the goal.
Lewes came back towards the end of the first half scoring the second and final try of the match.
The 5 – 8 defeat was the first defeat of the season for Barnsley Ladies who only started playing competitively two years ago.
The team, who play at Shaw Lane, spoke to JUS News earlier in the season, with manager Stuart Bennett saying that he was confident at the time that his team could “do the double” after their defeat to Gloucester team, Drybrook Ladies in the 2016 cup.
Barnsley Ladies posted on social media earlier today that “emotions were running high” after the defeat but that the team were looking forward to the tougher competition that next season would bring.
Their final game of the season is against a league match at home against Ormskirk this Sunday.
