Car crash horror at Co-op- driver arrested for drink and drugs offences

A car overturned and caught fire on Tuesday night after crashing into a corner shop in Gleadless Valley.

The Volkswagen Golf overturned on Gleadless Road after crashing into the metal shutters of a Co-op store.

The occupants of the car had fled the scene by the time Firearms officers- who were patrolling the area arrived.

A man and woman were arrested at a nearby property shortly after the incident, on suspicion of driving whilst unfit through drink and drugs, possession of Class A drugs and cultivation of cannabis.

A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Operational Support said: “Whilst patrolling the Gleadless area of Sheffield this evening a member of the public stopped our firearms officers and told them there was a car on it’s roof, further down Gleadless Road.”

“A good bit of detective work led officers to an address not too far away and a male and female were arrested for driving whilst unfit through drink and drugs, possession of class A drugs and cultivation of cannabis.

“A good bit of police work, with a couple of suites booked for our prisoners and a few questions to be asked in the morning.”

Anyone with any information of the incident should contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, or Sheffield South West Police on 0114 2963657.
