Building work to begin on Sheffield Sharks new home in the Olympic Legacy Park [VIDEO]

Planning permission has been granted for construction to begin on a new purpose built basketball arena at the Olympic Legacy Park, on the site of the old Don Valley Stadium.

The Park Community Arena will be a 2,000 all seater home to the Sheffield Sharks basketball team, as well as being a flexible events venue seating up to 3,000 people.

The £3.5 million development will house three full size basketball courts, which will allow the Sharks to play games, train, and bring their youth teams through, all under one roof.

Sheffield Sharks coach, Joel Rowe-Mills, 33 said: “It’s fantastic news for the business.”

The move will take away the existing overheads the club incur at the English Institute of Sport Arena and will allow them to open new revenue streams from secondary spends such as parking and refreshments.

They say the money made will then be reinvested back into the club and playing staff.

The venture is part of the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District and will be the main venue on the park.

Rowe-Mills said: “It’s a fantastic opportunity for us to be part of the other things that are going on at the Olympic Legacy Park.”

“There’s a new school, there’s a university technical college, there’s an advances research centre for health.”

“It’s going to be a great thing to be a part of and we’re going to be front and centre of it.”

Last night was the opening of the Sports Science Showcase at the University Technical College, on the Olympic Legacy Park.

The Sports Science Showcase event will outline the opportunities open to students interested in joining the UTC in Years 10 – 12.
