Barnsley take huge step towards promotion – South Yorkshire wrap up

Barnsley will finish the season with an unbeaten home record as they earned a crucial victory over Blackpool on Saturday in League One.

Blackpool took the lead in the 15th minute through a deflected shot by Harry Pritchard, before Cauley Woodrow netted with his 16th goal of the season just before halftime.

The winner was scored when Liam Lindsay glanced in a header at the front post in the 59th minute, giving the Tykes a vital three points and handing themselves a massive shot at securing automatic promotion to the Championship.

The win takes Barnsley four points clear of third-placed Portsmouth, with Pompey playing their game in hand tomorrow against Peterborough.

Promotion for The Tykes will be confirmed if Portsmouth lose the match.

Meanwhile, Rotherham will join League One next season, with relegation confirmed in a 2-1 loss away at West Brom.

After the Millers took the lead through Clark Robertson in the 50th minute, two quick-fire goals from a Jay Rodriguez penalty and Rekeem Harper’s first senior goal confirmed relegation.

They are 4 points behind Millwall, in 21st, with just one game left to play.

Back in the Championship, Sheffield Wednesday’s costly 3-3 draw with Preston on Saturday meant they cannot reach the playoffs this season despite a remarkable late-season revival.

Wednesday came from behind twice to eventually draw with the Lancashire team, but they are now six points off the promotion places with just one game remaining.

Finally, Doncaster Rovers boosted their chances off a play-off spot in League One with a 2-2 draw with Oxford United.

Top-scorer John Marquis put Rovers ahead before goals from Marcus Browne and James Henry put United in front.

Oxford’s Andrew Butler’s own goal in the 61st minute handed Doncaster a point. If Portsmouth beat Peterborough tomorrow, Doncaster will have their play-off place confirmed before their final game of the season at home to Coventry.
