World stage: Some 19 societies are expected to perform on one stage
Students are preparing for an evening of glitz and glamour for the 40th anniversary of International Cultural Evening to be held at Sheffield Students’ Union this Saturday.
The night of culture and entertainment promises to be the biggest event of the International Student Committee calendar.
The evening will follow an Academy Awards theme, complete with spotlight and red carpet, with cultural performances in dance, theatre and fashion.
Event organiser, Mafaz Abdul Karim, expects 19 societies to take to the stage to see off the academic year in star-like fashion.
'Red carpet, spot lights'
“For the 40th anniversary, we are having a kind of Academy Awards theme and trying to make it way more formal with a red carpet, spot lights, ramping up decorations and tech on the night,” he said.
Following successes earlier in the year, with Intro Fiesta, World Food Festival and World Week, Mafaz anticipates the night to be “an award-winning showcase of dazzling cultural performances.”
After its inauguration in 1972, the culture evening has attracted thousands of students, staff and special guests from around the world.
The event will take place at the Octagon Centre from 7pm this Saturday.
Tickets are available from the union box office from £6.50. Free popcorn included.
